What is a seed phrase?

A seed phrase is 12 or 24 words encoding a wallet's master key. Anyone with the words (and any passphrase you set) can restore the wallet and drain it.

How does a seed phrase work?

Most wallets create one at setup, following the BIP-39 standard. The words come from a fixed list of 2,048, and together they encode a big random number: 128 bits for 12 words, 256 for 24. Every private key and address the wallet will ever use is derived from that number, often across several chains.

It is not a password. Nobody can reset it and no support desk can recover it. Write it on paper or metal and keep it offline, somewhere you would still find it in five years. A screenshot, a cloud note or a message to yourself hands it to whoever gets into that account.

Phrase theft is still one of the most common ways people get drained. Fake support agents in DMs, sites that ask you to validate or sync your wallet, cloned wallet apps and airdrop checkers that want to verify eligibility all end at the same text box. No real app or support desk needs your phrase. Ever.

Picture your laptop dying on a trip. At home there is a sheet of paper with 24 words. You install the wallet on a new machine, type them in, and the same addresses and balances appear. Without that sheet the funds are gone for good.

Also called: recovery phrase, mnemonic, secret recovery phrase, BIP-39 phrase.

Where does a seed phrase show up in Cashboard?

Cashboard never asks for a seed phrase or private key, and its own code never signs a transaction. Watch-only portfolios need only a public address, and manual ones need no wallet at all. A signature comes up only if you swap on the web, and then your own wallet signs in Jupiter's or LI.FI's form. So anything claiming to be Cashboard that asks for your words is not Cashboard. Paste a private key or a 12 to 24 word phrase into the Perps positions address box by mistake and it removes the text on the spot and says why.

Frequently asked questions

Should I ever enter my seed phrase into a website?

No. The only place it belongs is the wallet software you are restoring. A website, dashboard, form or chat asking for it is a scam, whatever the logo says.
