Filecoin (FIL) live price dashboard

Filecoin is a decentralized storage network from Protocol Labs, the team behind IPFS founded by Juan Benet, and its mainnet launched in October 2020. This board puts FIL beside BTC and ETH with 7-day and 30-day candles.

What is Filecoin?

Filecoin is a decentralized storage network from Protocol Labs, the team behind IPFS founded by Juan Benet, and its mainnet launched in October 2020. Storage providers earn FIL for storing client data and must keep proving they still hold it (proofs of replication and spacetime). The Filecoin Virtual Machine added smart contracts in 2023.

Juan Benet started Protocol Labs in 2014 and built IPFS first. Filecoin raised money in a 2017 token sale and went to mainnet on October 15, 2020. The Filecoin Virtual Machine arrived on March 14, 2023 with EVM compatibility, so Solidity contracts run next to storage deals.

FIL has a 2 billion max supply. About 1.1 billion is set aside for storage providers: 330 million on a simple schedule with a six-year half-life, and 770 million released only as the network hits storage baselines. Providers lock FIL as pledge collateral before they earn anything. Then 25% of each block reward is available at once and the other 75% vests over 180 days.

Capacity numbers look huge. The data clients actually pay to store is a much smaller share, and that gap is what skeptics point to. Filecoin Onchain Cloud, introduced in November 2025 with fast retrieval and on-chain payments, is the attempt to close it.

What do traders watch on FIL?

  • Paid storage deals against raw network capacity.
  • Pledge collateral levels and block reward vesting.
  • Filecoin Onchain Cloud usage, especially for AI datasets.

Frequently asked questions

What is the max supply of FIL?

The max supply is 2 billion FIL. About 1.1 billion of that goes to storage providers, and much of it is released only as network storage grows.

How is Filecoin different from IPFS?

IPFS is a free protocol for finding and sharing files by their content, with no payment and no promise that anyone keeps them. Filecoin adds the incentive layer: providers are paid in FIL to store data and must keep proving they still have it.

Can I track FIL without an account?

Yes. The FIL board on this page runs in your browser and saves on your device. Prices come from CoinGecko. Cashboard does not read Filecoin wallets, so add your amount to a manual Portfolio and it is priced live.
