What are 24/7 markets?

24/7 markets trade every hour of every day, as crypto always has, while US stock exchanges close at night, on weekends and on market holidays.

How do 24/7 markets work?

Bitcoin and on-chain perps trade at 3 a.m. on a Sunday exactly as they do on a Tuesday afternoon. US stocks keep office hours: 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern on weekdays, with pre-market and after-hours sessions around that, and no exchange trading on Saturdays or Sunday daytime.

Tokenization and perps are pulling traditional assets onto the crypto schedule. Tokenized stocks, HIP-3 stock perps on Hyperliquid and prediction markets on macro events all trade outside exchange hours. News that breaks on a Saturday gets priced on Saturday.

It costs something. Liquidity thins out at night and on weekends, so spreads widen and smaller trades move the price further. Stock-linked products lose their outside reference price over the weekend, so they drift and then reconnect when overnight stock trading resumes on Sunday evening Eastern, sometimes hard. And your risk keeps running while you sleep. A liquidation at 4 a.m. counts the same as one at noon.

Picture an acquisition announced on a Saturday morning. The company's stock perp and its token reprice within minutes, while the listed stock still shows Friday's close. Nothing closes that gap before Sunday night, and that reopening is where leveraged positions get hurt.

Also called: always-on markets, 24/7 trading, around-the-clock trading.

Where do 24/7 markets show up in Cashboard?

The Stocks widget shows Yahoo Finance quotes with a session badge (Pre-market, Open, After hours or Closed), and outside trading hours the quote stays at the last close. The Tokenized stocks widget sets that close against the xStock and the Hyperliquid perp and flags a weekend gap on UTC Saturdays and Sundays only. Friday between the 4 p.m. Eastern close and midnight UTC, and Sunday evening Eastern through Monday's open, are not flagged even though the regular session is closed. The Robinhood stock tokens widget goes by the session instead, so its premiums are dimmed and tagged pre-market, after hours or closed whenever the regular session is shut.

Frequently asked questions

Can you trade stocks on weekends?

Not on the exchange, since Nasdaq and NYSE are closed on Saturdays and through Sunday daytime. You can still trade the price through tokenized stocks such as xStocks or Robinhood Stock Tokens where you are eligible, or through stock perps on Hyperliquid.
