What is a degen?

Degen is crypto slang for a trader who takes wild risks, like hour-old memecoins or extreme leverage, and for that style of trading itself.

What makes someone a degen?

It is short for degenerate gambler. It started as an insult and turned into a badge people put in their bios. A degen apes into tokens an hour old, runs high leverage on perps, deposits into protocols nobody has audited, and accepts that most of those bets end at zero for a shot at a few big ones.

The culture shaped the products. Memecoin launchpads and high-leverage perp venues are built for this behavior, and the slang comes from the same place: ape in, send it, bags, ngmi. On Base, the DEGEN token launched in January 2024 as a tipping token for the Farcaster community and took the name outright.

Behind the joke are real losses, mostly taken by people who size bets they cannot afford to lose. Plenty of experienced traders keep a small side wallet for this. A bad week stays there.

Take a made-up trader who splits $500 across ten new memecoins, $50 each. Eight go to zero, one doubles and one does 10x. The account ends at $600, up 20 percent. Take away that single 10x and it ends at $100, down 80 percent.
