What is EVM?

The EVM, or Ethereum Virtual Machine, is the runtime that executes smart contracts on Ethereum and on the many chains that copied its design.

How does EVM work?

Every node runs the same contract instructions and gets the same result, which is why a lending market or a DEX behaves the same for everyone. Contracts are mostly written in Solidity, sometimes Vyper, and compiled to EVM bytecode.

So many developers and tools target the EVM that dozens of chains copy it. Base, Arbitrum, OP Mainnet, BNB Chain, Polygon, Avalanche's C-Chain, Linea, Scroll, ZKsync Era, Gnosis, HyperEVM and Robinhood Chain are all EVM-compatible, some more faithfully than others. So one wallet and one 0x address work on all of them, and ERC-20 tokens follow the same rules everywhere.

Your address comes from your key, so it is identical on every EVM chain. Balances are not. Paste one address into a Base explorer and an Arbitrum explorer and you get two completely different token lists, because each chain keeps its own state. The same fact explains a classic mistake, sending tokens to a contract address that only exists on another chain.

Solana is the odd one out. It runs its own runtime, often called the SVM, with Rust programs and a different account model, so its addresses look nothing like 0x and an EVM-only wallet cannot hold SPL tokens.

Also called: Ethereum Virtual Machine, EVM-compatible.

Where does EVM show up in Cashboard?

A Portfolio widget watches one public 0x address on one network and reads balances through Blockscout. To follow the same address on several EVM chains, add one widget per chain. Watch-only indexing covers Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum One, Robinhood Chain, Arc, Polygon PoS, OP Mainnet, Linea, Scroll, ZKsync Era and Gnosis. As of October 2026 the web build returns an error for Base, Arbitrum One, Robinhood Chain, Arc and Polygon PoS. HyperEVM, BNB Chain and Avalanche get Chain status and trending pools, but no portfolio yet.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the same address on every EVM chain?

Yes. One key gives you one 0x address on every EVM chain. What sits at that address differs per chain, and a contract deployed on Base does not exist on Arbitrum unless someone deploys it there too.
