What is a price alert?
A price alert is a rule that notifies you when an asset crosses a level you set, so you can stop staring at the chart and still catch the move.
How does a price alert work?
You pick a market, a level and a direction, say BTC above a round number or ETH below last week's low. The alert sits quietly until the condition is met and then fires. That is all it does. Nothing gets closed, which is the whole difference from a stop loss.
Price is only the obvious trigger. Perps traders also alert on funding, because funding that climbs fast usually means longs are crowded, and on basis, the gap between the perp and spot. A funding alert tells you something about positioning that a price alert never can.
Two things catch people out. An alert is only as quick as its feed. If the data refreshes every 15 seconds, a fast token has already moved by the time you hear about it. And a level placed exactly on a round number can fire again and again as price chops around it.
Say you set an alert for SOL funding APR above 30 percent, a made-up level. When it fires, a leveraged long has just become expensive to hold. Trim it or sit tight; the alert will not decide for you.
Also called: price notification, crypto alert.
Where does a price alert show up in Cashboard?
The Price alert widget fires above or below a level you choose and shows the gap still left to it, in percent for price, APR points for funding or basis points for basis. Price alerts cover the 48 assets in Cashboard's built-in list, from BTC and ETH down to BONK and WIF, and check the quote every 15 seconds. You cannot paste in an arbitrary contract. Funding APR and basis triggers are narrower: they only cover what the Solana edge widget tracks, meaning SOL and Solana tokens like JUP or WIF. Web alerts need their tab left open, while the desktop app watches alerts across all boards even when minimized. Both versions fire once the condition holds and then wait for it to clear before they can fire again, though reloading the page or restarting the app re-arms an alert that is still true. The desktop app also keeps the same alert quiet for five minutes after it fires, so a level that price keeps chopping through does not spam you. The web version has no such pause. No alert ever places a trade.
Frequently asked questions
Is a price alert the same as a stop loss?
No. A stop loss is an order that closes your position when it triggers. A price alert only sends a notification, and what happens next is up to you.
