What is an SPL token?
An SPL token is any token made with Solana's shared Token Program. It is Solana's standard in the way ERC-20 is Ethereum's.
How does an SPL token work?
SPL stands for Solana Program Library, a set of on-chain programs for common jobs. The Token Program is one of them, and USDC runs on it. Nobody deploys their own token contract. Every token is a set of accounts managed by a shared program, either the original Token Program or the newer Token-2022.
Each token has a mint account that holds its supply, decimals and authorities. Balances sit in separate token accounts, one per wallet per token. Most wallets use the associated token account, an address derived from the wallet and the mint, so a sender always knows where to deliver.
Opening a token account locks a rent deposit of about 0.002 SOL, which comes back when you close it. Say a wallet has 50 empty accounts left over from old memecoins. Closing them returns roughly 0.1 SOL. Small money, but it adds up if you trade the trenches every day.
The authorities are where the risk sits. An active mint authority means the creator can print more supply. An active freeze authority means your account can be frozen. pump.fun creates tokens with both switched off, and checking them is the first thing to do on any token you did not watch launch.
Also called: Solana token, SPL.
Where does an SPL token show up in Cashboard?
Paste a public Solana address into a watch-only portfolio and Cashboard reads native SOL, SPL tokens and Token-2022 tokens over read-only Solana RPC, priced with DexScreener market data. Empty accounts are skipped. A token DexScreener cannot price shows no USD value instead of a guess. No signature is ever requested. Token terminal shows GeckoTerminal's mint and freeze authority tags for a Solana token you open in it.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get SOL back from empty token accounts?
Close them. Each empty token account holds about 0.002 SOL of rent, and closing it sends that back to your wallet. Many wallets have a close or burn-and-close action. Cashboard cannot do it for you. Its watch-only portfolio only reads, and the one transaction a board offers is a token swap in Jupiter's form, signed by your own wallet.
