What is Token-2022?
Token-2022, also called Token Extensions, is Solana's newer token program that lets issuers add features like transfer fees, hooks and metadata.
How does Token-2022 work?
The original Token Program is deliberately plain. Token-2022 is a separate program with the same model of mints and token accounts, plus extensions an issuer switches on when creating a token. It lives at a different program ID. That is why a wallet or app has to support it on purpose, and why older tools sometimes miss these tokens.
The list of extensions is long. Transfer fees withhold a cut of every transfer, and transfer hooks call a custom program on each move. Metadata can live in the mint itself. There are also interest-bearing tokens (only the displayed balance grows, not the supply), non-transferable tokens, confidential transfers, and a permanent delegate that can move or burn tokens from any account.
Regulated issuers like it for the controls. PayPal's PYUSD on Solana is a Token-2022 token, and other stablecoin and tokenized asset issuers use the permanent delegate extension for clawbacks.
For a holder, extensions change the risk. Made-up example: you send 1,000 units of a token with a 2 percent transfer fee. The recipient can use 980, and 20 sit withheld for the fee authority to collect. A hook can block transfers outright. A permanent delegate means the issuer can take tokens back. Read the extension list before you size a position.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an SPL token and a Token-2022 token?
Both use mints and token accounts. Token-2022 is a separate program at its own address that adds optional extensions such as transfer fees, transfer hooks and a permanent delegate. The original Token Program has none of them.
