How to paper trade stocks for free

The Paper trading widget opens on Stock: type a ticker such as AAPL, NVDA or SPY and open a simulated long or short against Yahoo Finance quotes. It runs free in the browser without an account. Stock positions are always 1x, and nothing is ever sent to a broker.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Open the template

Stocks & Cross-market, one of the starter boards under New from template, comes with Paper trading on it. A stock watchlist, the tokenized stock comparison and prediction markets come along, so you see the quote you are trading against.

  2. 2

    Pick a ticker

Stock is the default. Type a ticker, or take one of the suggestions: AAPL, NVDA, TSLA, MSFT, META, AMZN, GOOGL or SPY.

  3. 3

    Set side and size

Choose Long or Short and enter the size in dollars. With no leverage, a $10,000 position uses $10,000 of the $100,000 paper balance.

  4. 4

    Open the position

Press the button that names the trade, such as Open long AAPL. It stays grey until a quote has loaded.

  5. 5

    Close and review

Close a position with the X on its row. The result moves into Realized PnL, and the History tab keeps your last 50 closed trades with a win rate.

  6. 6

    Watch the market around it

Keep the Stocks widget and the Tokenized stocks comparison on the same board to see the cash price next to the xStocks token and the Hyperliquid perp.

Tips

  • Quotes come from Yahoo's free feed, which can trail the exchange during the session.
  • Fees and borrow costs are not charged, so shorts in particular look cheaper than they would at a broker.
  • Web boards live in this browser. Run Export this board from Ctrl K for a backup. The file keeps your paper positions, so keep it to yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a brokerage account to paper trade stocks on Cashboard?

No. Cashboard has no accounts and never talks to a broker. The widget reads public Yahoo Finance quotes and keeps the positions on your device.

Can I paper trade stocks outside market hours?

Yes. Outside trading hours the widget fills at the last close, so a position opened on Saturday sits at Friday's price until Monday's 9:30 open in New York. There is no pre-market or after-hours pricing. The ticket tags the quote Pre-market, After hours or Closed.

Last reviewed . Market data in Cashboard comes from the providers named on each widget and may be delayed. Nothing here is financial advice.
