What is Mantle?
Mantle is an Ethereum layer-2 that absorbed BitDAO in 2023, when BIT holders swapped their tokens for MNT one to one. MNT pays gas and runs governance, and the project sits close to Bybit, the exchange that backed BitDAO. Its ecosystem includes mETH, a liquid staking token for ETH.
BitDAO started in 2021 with Bybit as its main backer and built one of the largest treasuries in crypto. In May 2023 its members approved BIP-21, which folded BitDAO into Mantle and converted BIT to MNT one to one. Mantle mainnet went live that July.
The network began as an optimistic chain built on the OP Stack, with its data posted to EigenDA instead of Ethereum. On September 16, 2025 it switched to zero-knowledge validity proofs through Succinct's OP Succinct, which cut withdrawals from the usual week to hours.
MNT has a max supply of about 6.2 billion, and a big share of it still sits in the treasury instead of circulating. So treasury votes can matter as much as network usage. The other driver is Bybit. MNT trades deepest there, and an exchange campaign can move the price more than anything that happens on-chain.

What happened to BitDAO and the BIT token?
BitDAO merged into Mantle after the BIP-21 vote in May 2023. BIT was converted to MNT one to one, and the BitDAO treasury became the Mantle treasury.
Is Mantle owned by Bybit?
Not formally. Mantle is run through MNT governance, but Bybit backed BitDAO from the start and is still its closest partner, which is why most MNT liquidity still sits on Bybit.
