POL (ex-MATIC) live price dashboard
POL is the native token of Polygon PoS, where it pays gas and is staked by validators. This board puts POL beside BTC and ETH with 7-day and 30-day candles and Polygon PoS network status.
What is POL (ex-MATIC)?
POL is the native token of Polygon PoS, where it pays gas and is staked by validators. It replaced MATIC through a one-to-one migration that began on September 4, 2024. Polygon started in 2017 as Matic Network and now pitches Polygon PoS as a chain for payments and real-world assets.
Jaynti Kanani, Sandeep Nailwal, Anurag Arjun and Mihailo Bjelic started Matic Network in 2017, and it became Polygon in 2021. MATIC holders could swap to POL one to one from September 4, 2024, and Coinbase converted the MATIC it held for users in October 2025.
POL kept the 10 billion starting supply and adds 2 percent a year, 1 percent for validator rewards and 1 percent for a community treasury. A community proposal in late 2025 asked to end that inflation and use treasury buybacks instead.
The chain itself got faster. Heimdall v2 went live on July 10, 2025 and cut finality from about a minute to about five seconds. The Rio upgrade on October 8, 2025 targeted around 5,000 transactions per second. POL is also meant to secure the AggLayer, which links Polygon chains together.

What do traders watch on POL?
- Stablecoin payment volume on Polygon PoS.
- Whether governance trims the 2 percent yearly POL emission.
- Whether Polygon PoS holds 5-second finality and its Rio throughput target when payment traffic spikes.
What is POL used for on Polygon PoS?
POL pays for gas on Polygon PoS. The Polygon PoS page covers watch-only wallets, trending pools and network status: block height, block age, fees and how fast the RPC answers.
Where can you compare Polygon PoS with Ethereum layer 2s?
On the L2 scoreboard, which includes Polygon PoS with a Sidechain label where most chains show an L2BEAT stage. Gas on Polygon PoS is paid in POL, so its Fees figure from growthepie (CC BY 4.0) is in effect the POL spent on gas that day, priced in dollars. L2BEAT's value secured sits in the same row, so the chain's size and its fee take can be read together.

Frequently asked questions
Is MATIC the same as POL?
POL is the successor to MATIC. From September 4, 2024 MATIC could be upgraded to POL one to one, and POL took over as the gas and staking token of Polygon PoS. Most large exchanges converted balances for their users.
Does POL have a max supply?
No. POL started at 10 billion and grows about 2 percent a year under the current rules, half for validators and half for the community treasury. A proposal to remove that emission was debated in 2025.
Can I track POL without an account?
Yes. The POL board on this page runs in your browser and saves on your device. Prices come from CoinGecko. Paste a public Solana or EVM address into a watch-only Portfolio widget if you hold POL there.
