What are crypto narratives?

Crypto narratives are themes that pull money into a group of tokens at once, such as AI agents or cat coins. Traders and DexScreener call them metas.

How do crypto narratives work?

A narrative is a story the market agrees to trade for a while. DeFi had its summer in 2020, NFTs had 2021 and AI tokens ran in 2024. In memecoins the theme can flip inside a week, dogs one week and cats the next. Money rotates. When one theme cools, traders sell its winners and go looking for the next one, so tokens that share nothing but a label can rise on the same day.

DexScreener turns this into data with metas: hand-curated token groups built around a shared theme or story rather than fundamentals, maintained by its moderators and community. Each meta carries a combined market cap, volume and liquidity for its tokens, a token count and how far that market cap moved over windows such as 1 hour and 24 hours. DexScreener publishes a trending list of them.

A theme's market cap change is a sum, and sums hide things. One large token can carry a whole meta's 24h gain while most of its pairs bleed. Volume matters as much as the move. A theme that climbs on thin volume has probably been marked up by a few trades, while a real rotation shows up as heavy trading spread across several of its tokens.

Say the AI meta shows a 24h market cap gain of 12 percent. Open it and one token is up 60 percent on most of the theme's volume, while the other top pairs are flat or down. That is one token having a good day. A rotation into AI would have several of them rising together.

Also called: metas, meta, narrative rotation, narrative trading.

Where do crypto narratives show up in Cashboard?

The Narratives widget lists DexScreener's trending metas and ranks them by 24h market cap change, or by 1h change, market cap or volume. Click a theme to see up to 25 of its pairs by 24h volume, and filter those pairs to Solana, Base, Ethereum, Robinhood Chain or HyperEVM. Theme totals always cover every chain DexScreener tracks. The widget adds no themes of its own, and nothing in it is a recommendation.

Frequently asked questions

What is a meta in crypto?

Trader slang for the theme the market is buying right now, such as dog coins or AI agents. DexScreener uses the word for its hand-curated token categories, each with a combined market cap, volume and token count.

How do you spot a narrative rotation?

Watch for a theme climbing the 1h ranking while trading picks up across several of its pairs at once. A theme that rises on thin volume, or on the back of a single token, is weaker evidence. None of it tells you how long a run will last.
