What is Sui?
Sui is a layer-1 built by Mysten Labs, a team of former Meta engineers who worked on the Diem blockchain, and it went live on May 3, 2023. It uses the Move language and an object-based data model, so transactions that touch different objects can run in parallel. SUI pays for gas and is staked with validators.
SUI has a fixed supply of 10 billion, and less than half of it had been released by September 2026. The rest vests on a schedule with a release at the start of most months, so the vesting calendar matters more for SUI than for older coins.
The worst week came in May 2025. On May 22 an overflow bug let an attacker drain about $223 million from Cetus, the main DEX on Sui. Validators froze roughly $162 million that was still on the chain, and a governance vote a week later sent it back to users. Users got their money back, but critics still point to the freeze whenever someone calls Sui decentralized.
Mysten keeps building around the chain, with DeepBook as an on-chain order book and Walrus, a storage network live since March 2025. In February 2026 the first US spot SUI ETFs from Canary and Grayscale started trading, and both stake the SUI they hold.

Frequently asked questions
What is the max supply of SUI?
10 billion SUI, all minted at genesis. Most of it was still locked in September 2026 and is released on a monthly schedule, so circulating supply keeps rising even though the total never changes.
How is Sui different from Aptos?
Both came out of Meta's Diem project and both use Move. Sui reworked the language into Sui Move and stores everything as objects with owners, which lets simple transfers skip full consensus, while Aptos kept an account-based model closer to the original Diem design.
Can I track SUI without an account?
Yes. The SUI board on this page runs in your browser and saves on your device. Prices come from CoinGecko. Cashboard does not read Sui wallets, so add your amount to a manual Portfolio and it is priced live.
