What is XRP?
XRP is the native asset of the XRP Ledger, which David Schwartz, Jed McCaleb and Arthur Britto launched in 2012. Validators reach agreement through the ledger's own consensus protocol, with no mining and no staking, and a payment settles in 3 to 5 seconds. Ripple, the company most tied to XRP, uses it in cross-border payment products and issues the RLUSD stablecoin.
All 100 billion XRP were created when the ledger started. There is no issuance. Every transaction burns a tiny fee, so supply only goes down, very slowly. Ripple held a large share from day one and in 2017 put 55 billion XRP into escrow on the ledger.
That escrow releases 1 billion XRP on the first day of every month. Ripple usually locks most of it back up, often 700 to 900 million XRP, and 31.28 billion XRP were still in escrow after the September 1, 2026 release. The monthly headline sounds bigger than it is.
The other big driver for years was the SEC. It sued Ripple in December 2020, a 2023 ruling found that XRP sold on public exchanges was not a securities offering, and the case closed in August 2025 when both sides dropped their appeals. Canary's XRPC, the first US spot XRP ETF, started trading on November 13, 2025.

Frequently asked questions
What is the max supply of XRP?
100 billion XRP, all created in 2012. No new XRP can be made and each transaction burns a tiny fee. About 31 billion of it was still in Ripple's escrow in September 2026.
Is XRP the same as Ripple?
No. Ripple is a US company that builds payment software and holds a large amount of XRP. XRP is the native token of the XRP Ledger, an open-source network run by independent validators that would keep running without Ripple.
Can I track XRP without an account?
Yes. The XRP board on this page runs in your browser and saves on your device. Prices come from CoinGecko, and Binance fills in when CoinGecko does not answer. Cashboard does not read XRP wallets, so add your amount to a manual Portfolio and it is priced live.
