What is BNB Chain?

BNB Chain, formally BNB Smart Chain, is an EVM-compatible layer 1 that launched in September 2020 as Binance Smart Chain. It runs Proof of Staked Authority, with validators elected by BNB stake, and BNB pays for gas. PancakeSwap and a loud memecoin scene keep it busy.

Blocks have come every 0.45 seconds since the Fermi hard fork on January 14, 2026, down from 3 seconds in early 2025. With fast finality a block is usually final in about 1.1 seconds. Gas is quoted in gwei like on Ethereum but paid in BNB, and a swap usually costs a few cents or less.

The active validator set has 45 members: 21 in the cabinet and 24 candidates, ranked by the BNB staked on them. A small, known set is part of why the chain is fast. It is also why people call it centralized.

Spot trading runs through PancakeSwap, new memecoins through Four.meme and perps through Aster, with Venus and Lista DAO for lending. Cashboard covers chain status and trending pools here. It cannot index BNB Chain wallets yet.

What do traders watch on BNB Chain?

Memecoin launches on Four.meme and the PancakeSwap pools they graduate into.
Gas in gwei during bursts of trading. It normally stays low, so a spike means something is going on.
Stablecoin supply and bridge flows in and out of the chain.

No, though the two are closely linked. Binance launched the chain in 2020 as Binance Smart Chain and BNB is its gas token, but it runs as its own network with elected validators, and you do not need a Binance account to use it.

Not yet. BNB Chain has network status and trending pools today but no portfolio indexer, so a watch-only Portfolio set to BNB Chain cannot load balances. A manual Portfolio still works for holdings there.
