Ethereum is the smart contract layer 1 that Base, Arbitrum and most other rollups settle to. It switched from mining to proof of stake in the Merge on September 15, 2022, and no single company ships it: Geth, Nethermind, Besu and Reth come from separate client teams. Most of the money still sits in DeFi, stablecoins and staked ETH.

Gas is paid in ETH. Since the London upgrade in August 2021 every transaction burns a base fee that moves with demand, plus an optional tip for the block proposer. A plain transfer uses 21,000 gas, so what you pay in dollars depends on the gwei price at that moment and on ETH itself.

A new slot comes every 12 seconds and 32 slots make an epoch. A block is finalized after two epochs, roughly 13 minutes, and that is the point rollups and bridges treat as final. Validators stake ETH to take part. The Pectra upgrade in May 2025 raised the maximum effective balance per validator from 32 to 2,048 ETH.

What trades here is mostly size: blue-chip DeFi, stablecoin mints and redemptions, liquid staking tokens and ETH itself. Small-ticket token trading moved to layer 2s once blobs arrived in March 2024, and Fusaka widened blob space again in December 2025.

• Gas in gwei. The base fee can rise by at most 12.5% per block, so a real spike builds over a minute or two, and tips are where the panic shows first.
• The validator entry and exit queues. A long exit queue usually means stakers want out, and liquid staking tokens can trade below ETH while it lasts.
• Stablecoin supply and the capital sitting on layer 2s. The Market flows widget in Cashboard reads supply from DefiLlama and layer 2 value secured from L2BEAT. Bridge volume is not shown, because DefiLlama serves it only on a paid plan.
