What is OP Mainnet?

OP Mainnet is an optimistic rollup on Ethereum and the first chain built on the OP Stack, the code Unichain, Ink and the rest of the Superchain share. OP Labs develops it and the Optimism Collective governs it. It is also known for funding public goods through retroactive grants.

OP Mainnet makes a block every 2 seconds, and fees usually land well under a cent, most of it the cost of posting data to Ethereum. A single sequencer orders every transaction. Permissionless fault proofs went live in June 2024, so anyone can dispute a bad withdrawal claim, and that challenge window is why native bridge withdrawals take seven days.

Most DeFi here runs through Velodrome, the sister DEX of Aerodrome on Base, plus Uniswap and Aave. The ether.fi Cash card also runs on OP Mainnet. Compared with Base, it is a quieter chain for token trading.

OP Mainnet shares its code and upgrades with Unichain, Ink and other OP Stack chains, and those chains send a share of their sequencer revenue to the Optimism Collective. Base, once the biggest of them, left for its own stack in 2026.

No. Base started on the OP Stack but moved to its own codebase in 2026, and the two chains have separate sequencers, apps and liquidity. Coinbase runs Base, and the Optimism side runs OP Mainnet.
