Keyboard shortcuts and mouse gestures

Press Ctrl K (Cmd K on macOS) to open the command palette, which can add any widget and run most board actions. This page lists every other shortcut and gesture by context: anywhere on the board, the canvas, a selected widget, an active widget, the palette and dialogs. The keys are the same in the web app and in Cashboard Desktop.

Documentation menu

How shortcuts apply

Every shortcut on this page is handled inside the page itself, so the web app and Cashboard Desktop behave the same. Cashboard Desktop adds no menu shortcuts or system-wide shortcuts of its own. The Boards page covers the Add panel, the Style tab and board management that these keys act on.

On macOS, press Cmd where this page shows Ctrl, and Option where it shows Alt. The command palette and the tooltips show the key for your system: Ctrl on Windows and Linux, ⌘ on macOS.

A few rules decide whether a key does anything at all:

  • Keys with Ctrl or Cmd work while a board is open, even when a button has focus. All of them except Ctrl K stand down while you type in a text field, so the field keeps its own undo, cut and paste. Ctrl A, Ctrl C, Ctrl X and Ctrl V also stand down while a widget is active.
  • Single keys (V, P, H, Space, Enter, Shift 1 and Shift 2) are ignored while keyboard focus is in a field, a drop-down, a button or a link. After you click a button in the top bar, click an empty spot on the board once, then press the key.
  • The canvas shortcuts need the canvas on screen. The template picker and the shared-board review screen have no canvas, so only the top bar shortcuts (Ctrl K, undo and redo) apply there.
  • Focus mode hides the top bar, so Ctrl K, undo and redo are off while it is on. The canvas shortcuts keep working.

Anywhere on the board

These shortcuts use Ctrl or Cmd. They work with either canvas tool. Copy, cut, duplicate and the two order keys need at least one selected widget.

Shortcuts with Ctrl or Cmd
Windows and LinuxmacOSWhat it doesNotes
Ctrl KCmd KOpens or closes the command palette.Works even while you type in a field. The Commands button in the top bar also opens it. Not available in focus mode.
Ctrl ZCmd ZUndoes the last change.Ignored while you type in a field, where the field's own undo runs. Keeps the last 100 steps, and the history clears when you open another board. The Undo button does the same.
Ctrl Shift ZCmd Shift ZRedoes the change you undid. There is no Ctrl Y. The Redo button does the same.
Ctrl ACmd ASelects every widget on the board.Ignored while a widget is active.
Ctrl CCmd CCopies the selected widgets.Inside an active widget, in a field, or with text highlighted on the page, the key copies text as usual. The copy lives in Cashboard for this session, not in the system clipboard, and it survives switching boards.
Ctrl XCmd XCuts the selected widgets.Same rules as copy. One undo step restores them. Cutting a Custom app widget on desktop clears its saved browsing session, and the pasted copy starts a fresh one.
Ctrl VCmd VPastes the copied widgets. They land as one block in the free spot nearest the middle of your view, with fresh ids, unlocked, above everything else, and selected.
Ctrl DCmd DDuplicates every selected widget. With nothing selected, Cashboard leaves the key alone. The copies land in the free spot nearest the middle of your view, not beside the originals. They are selected but not active, and they are never locked.
Ctrl ]Cmd ]Brings the selected widgets to the front.Frames always stay underneath, and a locked widget keeps its place.
Ctrl [Cmd [Sends the selected widgets to the back.Just above the frames. A locked widget keeps its place.
Ctrl \Cmd \Hides or shows the tool panel.Cashboard remembers the choice. In a window narrower than 768 px the panel is a drawer opened from the menu button, and this key changes nothing you can see.

Undo covers adding and removing widgets, moving and resizing, style and setting changes, and renaming the board. A whole drag or resize is one step, and each arrow key press is one step. Moving the view is not a step: undo and redo keep the view where it is, so a pan or zoom never costs you an undo press.

Tools and view keys

These keys have no modifier and are identical on every system. The focus rule above applies: a field, button or link that has focus blocks them.

Single-key canvas shortcuts
KeysWhat it doesNotes
V or PSwitches to the Select tool. The default tool: one click selects a widget and a second click uses it. Same as the Select tool button in the top bar.
HSwitches to the Hand tool.Dragging, scrolling and pinching move the board even over widgets, and widgets cannot be selected or moved. Choosing it clears the current selection. Same as the Hand tool button.
Hold SpaceActs as the Hand tool while the key is down.Your chosen tool returns when you release the key or the window loses focus. Ignored while a widget is active.
Shift 1Fits every widget on screen.Needs at least one widget. Zoom stays between 20% and 200%, so a small board can be enlarged and a very large one may not fit completely. Same as the Fit the board on screen button in the bottom left corner of the canvas.
Shift 2Fits the selected widgets on screen.Needs at least one selected widget. Same zoom limits as Shift 1. The right-click menu and the palette offer it as Zoom to selection.

In windows 1024 px wide or more the top bar adds view buttons. Zoom out and Zoom in change the zoom by 10 percentage points per click, and Reset view sets 100% with the board origin 32 px from the top left corner. The two zoom buttons zoom around the board origin rather than the middle of the screen, so content can drift sideways. Ctrl with the scroll wheel zooms around the pointer instead.

Mouse, trackpad and touch

The scroll wheel pans the board. It does not zoom. Hold Ctrl (Cmd on macOS) to zoom with it, or pinch on a trackpad.

Mouse, trackpad and touch gestures
GestureWhat it doesNotes
Scroll wheel or two-finger scrollPans the board.Over an active widget, its own lists and tables scroll first, because most widgets mark their scrolling area. Over a widget that is not active, the board pans.
Shift with the scroll wheelPans sideways.Windows and Linux.
Ctrl with the scroll wheel (Cmd on macOS)Zooms toward the pointer.Between 20% and 200%.
Trackpad pinchZooms toward the pointer.Same range.
Drag on empty canvasDraws a selection box in the Select tool.Every widget the box touches is selected, even if it only overlaps a corner. Shift is not needed. With the Hand tool, the same drag pans the board.
Drag with the middle mouse buttonPans the board.Works over widgets too, in both tools.
Double-click on empty canvasZooms in to twice the size.Shift with the double-click zooms out to half.
Click on empty canvasClears the selection. It also ends use of an active widget. Esc clears the selection too.
Drag anywhere with the Hand tool, or while holding SpacePans the board.Includes drags that start on a widget.
Drag inside the minimapPans the board.Scrolling over the minimap zooms. The minimap sits in the bottom right corner of windows 768 px wide or more, and Show minimap in the Style tab turns it on or off.
One-finger drag and two-finger pinchPan and zoom on a touch screen.Tapping a widget selects it, and a second tap uses it, like clicks.
Right-clickOpens a menu on a widget, on a selection or on empty canvas. The items are listed under Right-click menu below. It does not open on a widget with the Hand tool.

Selected widget

Click a widget to select it. A selected widget gets a highlight ring and resize handles on its corners and edges, and the Style tab edits it. Several widgets can be selected at once, and the move, resize, order, duplicate and delete controls below then act on all of them.

Controls for the selected widget
Keys or gestureWhat it doesNotes
Drag the headerMoves the widget, or the whole selection.Snaps to the grid while snapping is on. The grid button in the top bar reads Disable grid snapping or Enable grid snapping, and the palette offers the same switch. Frames move by their header too. A single widget also snaps to its neighbours, as described under Smart guides.
Drag a corner or an edgeResizes the widget.Between 220 and 2400 px wide and between 140 and 1800 px tall. Resizing snaps to the grid while snapping is on. Hold Shift while dragging to keep the proportions.
Arrow keysMove the selected widgets by 1 px.The grid is ignored. Each press is one undo step. Works when focus is on the board, not in a field or on a button. With Ctrl or Cmd held, the arrow keys do nothing on the board. Moving a frame this way does not carry the widgets inside it.
Shift with Arrow keysMove the selected widgets by 10 px.Same rules as the plain arrow keys.
Alt with Arrow keys (Option on macOS)Resize the selected widgets by 1 px.Right and Down grow them, Left and Up shrink them, within the size limits above.
Alt and Shift with Arrow keysResize the selected widgets by 10 px.Same rules as above.
EnterMakes the selected widget active.Select tool only, with exactly one widget selected. Same as clicking the widget a second time.
Delete or BackspaceRemoves the selected widgets. No confirmation, and Ctrl Z brings them back. Does nothing while you type in a field or while focus is inside a note. The trash icon in the widget header does the same for one widget.
Ctrl D or Cmd DDuplicates the selected widgets.Details are under Anywhere on the board. The copy icon in the widget header does the same for one widget.
Tab, then Enter or SpaceSelect a widget with the keyboard.Keyboard focus can reach each widget with Tab. Enter or Space on a focused widget selects it, and Enter on a selected widget makes it active.

A locked widget (Lock position in the Style tab) ignores the arrow keys, cannot be dragged or resized, and shows no resize handles. Dragging it pans the board instead. It can still be removed with Delete and restyled. Locked widgets also stay put when you align or distribute a selection.

Selecting

  • Drag on empty canvas to draw a selection box. Every widget the box touches is selected, including one it only overlaps. Shift is not needed. A selection box that starts outside a frame and crosses its edge selects the frame too. Start and finish the box inside the frame to pick only its contents.
  • Shift, Ctrl or Cmd with a click adds a widget to the selection or removes it.
  • A plain click on one widget of a group selects only that widget. Click the selected widget a second time to make it active.
  • Click on empty canvas, or press Esc, to clear the selection.
  • Ctrl A selects every widget, and Shift 2 fits the selection on screen.
  • The middle mouse button pans the board in the Select tool, so a drag never has to start on empty canvas.

Smart guides

While one widget is being dragged, red lines show when its edge or centre lines up with a neighbouring widget, and the widget snaps to that line within 8 screen pixels. The guide wins over grid snapping. Dragging several widgets together keeps their layout and snaps to the grid only.

Frames

Dragging a frame by its header, alone or as part of a selection, carries the widgets whose centre is inside it. Locked widgets are not carried, and neither are widgets you selected along with the frame, since those move anyway. When two frames move together, only the first selected frame carries its contents. Nudging a frame with the arrow keys moves the frame alone.

Right-click menu

Right-click a widget for Duplicate, Copy, Cut, Paste, Bring to front, Send to back, Lock or Unlock, Zoom to selection and Remove. Right-click inside a selection and the menu acts on all of it. Right-click empty canvas for Paste, Select all, Fit board on screen, Add note and Add frame. The menu does not open on a widget with the Hand tool, and inside the text field of an active widget you get the browser's own menu instead. Esc closes it without clearing the selection.

Align and distribute

With several widgets selected, the Style tab shows an Arrange panel with six align buttons (left edges, horizontal centres, right edges, top edges, vertical centres, bottom edges), two distribute buttons that need three or more widgets, and Bring to front, Send to back and Remove. The command palette lists the same commands. Locked widgets neither move nor set the alignment line. Distribute does nothing when the widgets overlap or when one encloses the others.

Active widget

A selected widget only highlights, and it shows the hint Click to use this widget. An active widget takes your clicks, the scroll wheel and typing. Make a widget active by clicking it a second time, by double-clicking its body, or by pressing Enter while it is selected. A widget you add from the Add panel or from the command palette starts out active.

To leave an active widget, press Esc (not while typing in a field), click empty canvas, or select another widget. Choosing the Hand tool ends it too.

Most widgets have no keys of their own beyond ordinary typing. These do:

Command palette

The command palette is a search box over board actions. Open it with Ctrl K (Cmd K on macOS) or the Commands button, type a few letters and press Enter. The Add panel has no search field, so the palette is the fast way to find a widget by name.

Keys in the palette

Command palette keys
Keys or gestureWhat it does
Ctrl K or Cmd KOpens the palette. Pressed again, it closes it.
TypingFilters the list as you type.
Up arrow and Down arrowMove the highlight. It wraps from the last entry to the first and back.
EnterRuns the highlighted entry and closes the palette. A dimmed Undo last change or Redo change entry does nothing.
Click on an entryRuns it and closes the palette.
EscCloses the palette without running anything. A click outside it or on the close button does the same, and focus returns to where it was.

How matching works

The palette keeps entries whose name contains what you typed, ignoring letter case and any spaces at either end. It is a plain substring match on the name, not a fuzzy search, so your words must appear in the name in that order. chart finds Add price chart and every Jump to entry for a widget with chart in its title, while price graph finds nothing. The hint on the right is not searched.

Many Add entries carry extra keywords in brackets, and those count. Typing bybit finds Add live liquidations (Binance, Bybit, OKX), zora finds Add Base launches (Zora and Clanker), and lighter finds Add Robinhood perps (Lighter). With nothing typed the list shows everything: the Add entries first, then actions, boards, templates and Jump to entries.

Export this boardJSONDownloads the board as a JSON file named after it. Nothing is removed from the file, so wallet addresses and holdings you entered are in it.
Import a boardJSONOpens a file picker for an exported .json file and adds it as a new board named <name> (import). The top bar shows Board imported, or the reason it failed.
Switch to <board name>BoardOne entry for every board except the open one. Saves the open board first.

Jump to <widget name>WidgetOne entry per widget on the open board, by its title. Moves the view to frame that widget, up to 200% zoom, without selecting it.

Build several widgets at once

Type widget names separated by commas, and, + or &, and the first row becomes a Build entry. Typing btc chart, funding, odds shows Build Price chart, Funding rates, Prediction markets with the hint 3 widgets. Names are matched against plain words such as prices, perps and odds. A phrase the palette does not recognise is skipped, and the hint says so.

Press Enter and all the widgets are added as one block below whatever is already on the board, none of them selected, and the view fits the whole board. A recipe also starts when your text begins with build, make or create, and then a single widget name is enough.

Dialogs, drawers and focus mode

Keys in dialogs, drawers and focus mode
WhereKeysWhat happens
Command paletteEscCloses it. The palette section above lists its other keys.
Share this board dialogEsc and EnterEsc closes the dialog. In the Open a link someone sent you field, Enter opens the pasted link. See Templates and sharing for what a share link carries.
Desktop-only dialog (web build)EscCloses the dialog that opens when you click a widget that runs only in Cashboard Desktop. A click outside it closes it too.
Tool panel drawer (windows narrower than 768 px)Esc and TabEsc closes the drawer. Tab cycles through its controls without leaving it.
Focus modeEscLeaves focus mode. Clicking the pill at the top of the board that reads focus mode does the same.

Focus mode hides the top bar and the tool panel, clears the selection and fits the board in view, which suits a screen share or a second monitor. Enter it with the Enter focus mode button in the top bar (windows 1024 px wide or more) or with the palette entry of the same name. The canvas shortcuts and gestures keep working in it. Ctrl K, undo and redo do not.

What Cashboard does not have

These are common in other canvas tools and are not in Cashboard:

  • Redo is Ctrl Shift Z. There is no Ctrl Y.
  • There are no group or ungroup commands. Frames are the way to move widgets together.
  • The board has no keys for zooming in and out and no Ctrl S. Boards save as you work, and the top bar shows Saved locally (the words appear in windows 1024 px wide or more) or Save failed.
  • Nothing can be dragged in from the Add panel or dropped from a file, so add widgets with a click in the panel or from the palette.
  • The Add panel has no search field. The palette does the searching.
  • Copied widgets stay inside Cashboard for the session. They are not placed on the system clipboard.

Tips

  • Add a widget without the mouse: Ctrl K, type chart, Enter. The new widget is active, so you can type into it at once.
  • Build a starter board in one line: type chart, funding, liquidations in the palette and press Enter.
  • Pan across widgets without changing tools: hold Space, drag, then let go.
  • Drag slowly near another widget and let the red guide line grab it; the arrow keys then move the last pixel.
  • On a large board, Shift 1 fits everything, Shift 2 fits the selection, and Jump to in the palette frames a single widget.
  • If a key does nothing, click an empty spot on the board and try again. A button or field holding focus is the usual cause.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a redo shortcut?

Yes. Press Ctrl Shift Z, or Cmd Shift Z on macOS. Cashboard has no Ctrl Y.

Why does the mouse wheel move the board instead of zooming?

The wheel pans the board. To zoom, hold Ctrl (Cmd on macOS) while you scroll, pinch on a trackpad, or use the zoom buttons in the top bar. Shift 1 fits every widget on screen.

Why do V, H and Space do nothing?

Single-key shortcuts are ignored while keyboard focus is in a field, a drop-down, a button or a link. Click an empty spot on the board, then press the key again. They also need the canvas on screen, so they do not work on the template picker or the shared-board review.

Can I select or move several widgets at once?

Yes. Drag on empty canvas to draw a selection box, or hold Shift, Ctrl or Cmd and click to add or remove a widget. Ctrl A selects every widget. Moving, resizing with the arrow keys, duplicating, copying, cutting, reordering and deleting then act on the whole selection, and the Style tab offers align and distribute.

Do the shortcuts differ between the web app and Cashboard Desktop?

No. Both run the same board and the same key handlers. Cashboard Desktop does not add menu shortcuts or global shortcuts of its own.

How do I move or resize a widget by a single pixel?

Select the widget and press the arrow keys to move it 1 px, or hold Alt (Option on macOS) with the arrow keys to resize it by 1 px. Add Shift for steps of 10 px. Locked widgets ignore these keys.
